Galaxy S9 - Replacing the screen

1. Turn off your device by holding down the power button until the “Power off” option appears.
2. Use your finger to confirm that you want to shut down your device and wait until the screen goes blank.

To loosen the back cover, use a heat gun or an ordinary hair dryer. Warm glue is easier to loosen, allowing you to remove the back cover. The easiest way to loosen the back cover is to use a flat and flexible tool such as the iPlastix or iFlex.

You will also need several picks to unstick the back cover all around.

1. Heat the spot where you start and place a suction cup on the bottom of the back cover.
2. Press a flat tool between the back cover and the frame and pull on the suction cup.

The iPlastix is made of plastic, so it won't scratch the device. On the other hand, it's very soft and tricky to insert.

Be extra careful, the back cover can break very easily. If necessary, apply the heat several times and try again. Removing the back cover might take half an hour. Take a little more time and work carefully to make sure you don't break anything.

1. Once the tool is inserted, stick a pick into the gap to keep it open. Then run the tool around the entire edge to gradually loosen the glue.
2. Then heat the next part and insert the picks one by one.

The back cover glue is extra strong on the lower edge.

Once the back glass is loosened everywhere, you should only lift it slightly, because the fingerprint sensor, which is located under the camera, still connects the back glass and the circuit board with a very short cable. You will loosen this in the next step.

1. After detaching the back cover, carefully lift it and disconnect the fingerprint sensor using the spudger.
2. Then you can completely remove the back cover and set it aside.

Then remove all the equally long Phillips screws from the logic board cover and store them together.

This phone has only two different screw lengths. If some screws don't come off immediately, you can also use a pair of tweezers.

1. The logic board cover with the NFC tag is latched in at the top.
2. Pry it up a little and then take it out.

• Battery connector

1. Now the battery connector is free.
2. To avoid short circuits during the repair, disconnect the battery.

• 5 × 4.0 mm Phillips

Now remove the speaker. These screws are also equally long.

1. Lift the speaker a little using tweezers and then remove it.

• Connector

1. Now disconnect the front camera connector using a spudger.
2. Pry it up from the free side where there are no PCB components.
3. Then take the camera out of its holder.

1. Now remove the SIM tray.
2. The best way is to use a SIM tool or a paper clip.
3. Then pull out the SIM tray.

• Antenna Plug

1. Now disconnect the different plugs from the logic board.
2. Twist the spudger gently. Don't use it like a crowbar, or you may damage the logic board.
3. There are small parts next to the connectors that break easily.
4. Then disconnect the button plugs of the antenna cables.
5. Grab the cable with the tweezers, not on the plug itself.
6. Disconnect the plug with a twist of the tweezers.

1. Now remove the single screw on the logic board.
2. Before removing the logic board, make sure that all connectors are bent aside and don't get stuck.
3. The bottom side of the logic board is still connected to the USB board. Fold up the logic board and flick off the connector using a spudger.
4. Then put the logic board aside.

1. Use tweezers to loosen the glued on sensor cable unit.
2. The cable unit is latched in at the top. Lift it up a little and unglue the copper tape.

1. Use a flat tool to unglue the earpiece – if necessary.
2. If your spare part comes with a new earpiece, you don't have to reuse the old earpiece.

1. Then remove the vibration motor, which is also glued.
2. Pry out the motor gently using a flat tool.

• Connector

1. Next remove the audio jack. It's fastened with a screw.
2. Loosen the screw and then unplug the connector.
3. There's a recess in the upper corner, where you can pry out the audio port.

1. Remove the other screws of the USB board. They're all the same length.
2. Remove the white and blue antenna cable from its guide.
3. The cable of the USB board is glued to the frame. Use a spatula to unglue it.
4. Then pick up the USB board and gradually release it using the spatula.
5. Now take out the whole USB board.

The battery glue is very strong, so you should use hot air again.

Never heat the battery directly and don't bend it.

The battery is glued around the outer edges but not at the center.

1. Apply the hot air from the display side.
2. We recommend running a flat tool, such as the iFlex, all around the battery.
3. Now take out the battery.

• Speaker gasket

1. Now take the new display and compare it to the old one. If necessary, you have to reuse some gaskets or holders.
2. Remove the backing films from the sticker surfaces, so you can attach the front camera or sensors, for example.

1. Put the battery in the display unit.
2. Press the battery firmly into the frame so the glue will stick better.

Now insert the USB board.

1. Take the USB board, place it in the display unit and press it in.
2. Make sure that all parts are correctly seated.
3. Stick the flex cable back to the frame.
4. Then put the antennas in their holder. Start with the blue antenna.
5. Then fasten the USB board's screws.

• Connector

1. Insert the audio jack and press it in.
2. Attach the connector and fasten the screw.

1. Put the vibration motor in the little round opening on the left side of the case.
2. Use your fingers to press the motor firmly into place.

1. Insert the sensor cable into the case. Make sure the cable is sitting right.
2. Press the sensor with your finger so the glue will stick.

1. Put the earpiece back in the case.
2. Press it on a little so the glue will stick better.

1. Take the logic board and plug in the connector at the bottom.
2. Now you slowly fold the logic board into the device.
3. Make sure you don't squeeze in any cables.
4. Bend all antennas and connectors to the side.
5. Press the logic board in to make it click into place.
6. Then fasten the single screw of the logic board.

1. Now insert the SIM tray.

If it gets stuck, the logic board may not be sitting right.

Now attach all the plugs.

1. You can position the antenna plugs with tweezers and then click them on.
2. Also attach the connectors for the display and the volume buttons.
3. All connectors engage with a click. If not, remove the connector and try again.

• Connector

1. Insert the front camera and attach its connector.

1. Then place the speaker back over the USB board, press it in and screw it tight.
2. Make sure it's latched in at the bottom.

• Battery connector

1. Connect the battery connector.

• 10 × 4.0 mm Phillips

1. Then attach the midframe with the NFC tag.
2. Latch it in and press it in all around.
3. Then fasten all the screws again.

• Fingerprint connector

1. Before you put the back cover back on the case, reconnect the fingerprint sensor.
2. Position the back cover over the device and lift it slightly so that you have access to the connector. Keep the back glass as still and close to the device as possible.
3. You can use a plastic tool, such as a spudger, to reach the connector and push it down. Alternatively, you can use a longer tool like ESD tweezers or the ESD spudger. Be patient and try to keep your hands as still as possible.
   
   

Test your device before you attach the back cover. Only attach the back cover loosely to test the display.

1. Turn on the device and open the dialpad.
2. Enter *#0*# to open the test menu.
3. The test menu lets you check the display for pixel errors and calibrate the touch screen.
4. Also check all other functions such as the camera, speaker, or status LED.

1. Before reattaching the back cover, check the glue. It should be sitting evenly on the back cover. You can remove any excess glue.
2. Then press on the back cover.
3. Heat the back cover again to bond the glue.
4. You can press on the back cover with your fingers while the glue cools down.

Please note that your smartphone's water ingress protection is no longer the same after you open it.
