In this repair guide, we show you how to replace your Samsung Galaxy Note 4’s defective display unit on your own. You need this repair if the glass is cracked, the touchscreen no longer responds to touch, or the LCD remains black or flickers.

  1. Removing the stylus

    1. Use your finger to pull the stylus out of your Galaxy Note 4.
  2. Removing the back cover

    1. Disconnect the back cover from the back of your device. There’s a little indentation (blue arrow) at the top of your Galaxy Note 4 that you can stick your fingernail in.The back cover is hooked onto the device at several points so you have to use your finger in more than one place and then pull carefully.
    2. Remove the back cover.

    1. Using your finger, lift the battery a little bit out of the enclosure.
    2. Use your thumb and finger to take the battery out of the enclosure.
  4. Removing the SIM and microSD cards

    1. Use your finger to remove the SIM card from the SIM card slot.
    2. Remove the microSD card from the microSD card slot.

    The cables of the two touch sensor buttons for “Back” and “Active Apps” are routed along the lower edge of the screen. Be very careful when detaching the display glass and don’t stick the tool too far into your device at either of the two points (blue arrows).

    1. Heat the display with hot air to soften the glue. If the glue hardens during this step, heat the display again.
    2. Carefully insert the steel laboratory spatula between the display and the enclosure. As soon as a little gap opens up, you can insert a pick.
    3. Leave the steel spatula where it is to hold the gap open while you move the pick along all the edges.
    4. Be very careful at the bottom of the device. As we mentioned at the beginning, the connection cables (blue arrows) for the two touch sensor buttons are down there.

    1. Remove the display glass from your device.
      The cables of the two touch sensor buttons for “Back” and “Active Apps” (blue arrows) are routed along the lower edge of the screen. Please be very careful when you disconnect the display.
    2. The back of the display is glued to the enclosure frame. Carefully insert the steel laboratory spatula between the display and the frame to disconnect the display. If the glue’s too strong, use hot air too soften it. The display will break and shatter during this process.
      The back of the display is connected to the logic board. The connections are in the upper area as shown in the pictures.
    3. Once the display is disconnected, you can flip it up 180° at the upper edge to expose the adhesive surface below. Remove the rest of the adhesive foil without leaving any residue.
  7. Removing the display

    1. Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the two connections for the LCD and touchscreen. Insert the tip of the tool below the connections and use a little force to pry them off of the logic board.
    2. Remove the display.
  8. Cleaning the enclosure frame

    1. Carefully remove any adhesive residues or dirt from the enclosure using a pair of tweezers, the steel spatula, a paintbrush or a brush. Be very thorough so the new display will fit perfectly and the glue will stick well.

    1. If there’s any protective packaging on the new display’s connections, remove it to simplify this repair.
    2. Connect the display’s two connections to the logic board one after the other by positioning each connection over the corresponding part on the logic board and using a little force to press it in. You’ll hear them gently click into place.
    3. Carefully flip the display over and set it loosely on the enclosure. Put in the battery and start up your device.
    4. Open the phone app and select the numerical keypad to start diagnostics mode with the < *#0*# > code.
    5. In diagnostics mode, you can use the “Touch” function to test the display’s touch area.
    6. If all the visual, brightness and touch area functions are working, you can install the display. You can disconnect and remove the display and battery again.

    1. Remove all the protective film from the display, both from the adhesive surfaces and from the glass surface.

    1. Connect the display’s connections to the logic board.
    2. Carefully fold down the display to close the enclosure. Make sure the display is positioned correctly because its glue will stick to the enclosure frame right away. Put on the display at the upper edge and then lower it carefully.
    3. Press on the entire surface of the display with your finger so the glue will stick to the entire enclosure.
  13. Optional: Clamping the device

    1. If you have clamps for working with glue or something similar, we recommend clamping your device.
    2. You can also heat it slightly with hot air so the glue will stick even better.
  14. Inserting the SIM and microSD cards

    1. Put the microSD card in the microSD slot and make sure it’s aligned right.
    2. Using your finger, carefully push the SIM card into the SIM card slot and make sure it’s aligned right.
  15. Installing the battery

    1. Put the battery back in the enclosure. Make sure the battery’s four gold contacts are touching the four gold springs in your device.
    2. Put the battery back in so it’s flush with the enclosure.

    1. Put the back cover on the back of your Galaxy Note 4. Make sure the back cover is in the right position.
    2. Press the entire surface of the back cover onto your whole smartphone so all the back cover’s clips click into place in your device.
  17. Putting in the stylus

    1. Put the stylus back in your device by pushing it into the opening at the bottom of the enclosure until it clicks into place.
