Replace the battery of your LG G7 ThinQ yourself

If your G7 ThinQ's battery doesn't last long and you need to recharge frequently, a new battery can work wonders.

Changing the battery will also help if your LG G7 ThinQ discharges faster or even shuts down in the cold.

The repair is a bit more difficult because the LG G7 ThinQ has to be opened via the glass back cover.

Make a backup before the repair, use a clean work surface and take your time. If you are stuck at any point, simply contact our live chat or write a comment at the end of the guide.

Opening your device can be a real test of patience, when the screen or back of your phone is glued very strong. With an iSclack evo, you can simplify the process. The pincer-like handle allows you to create a gap between the screen and the frame with minimal effort. At the same time, you have the other hand free to use a narrow tool such as a plectrum or the iFlex to enlarge the gap. The included cover foils allow you to use the iSclack evo even if the screen is splintered.

17 steps
  1. Switching off the LG G7 ThinQ

    1. Turn off your device by holding down the power button on the side until the “Power off” option appears.
    2. Tap to confirm and wait until the screen goes black.
  2. Removing the back cover

    1. The back cover’s heavily glued to the chassis. Heat the device evenly with hot air to soften the glue. A temperature of 60 - 80°C should be sufficient. As a rule of thumb, you should still be able to touch your device without it being uncomfortably hot.
    2. The easiest way to loosen the back cover is to use a flat and flexible tool such as the iPlastix or iFlex. You will also need several picks to unstick the back cover all around.
    3. Heat the spot where you start and place a flat tool between the back cover and the frame.
    4. Use a suction cup to lift the glass if you can't find a place to insert your tool.
    5. With the iSclack, you can easily lift the back cover and then use a flat tool to loosen the glue. Put both suction cups on the display and the backcover and press the lever of the tool together like a pair of pliers.

The iPlastix is made of plastic, so it won't scratch the device. On the other hand, it's very soft and tricky to insert. The iFlex makes it easier to get into the gap between the glass and the frame because it's made of very thin, stable metal. But it also makes it easier to scratch the frame of your device.

Be extra careful, the back cover can break very easily. If necessary, apply the heat several times and try again. Removing the back cover might take half an hour. Take a little more time and work carefully to make sure you don't break anything.

    1. Once the tool is inserted, stick a pick into the gap to keep it open. Then run the tool around the entire edge to gradually loosen the glue.
    2. Then heat the next part and insert the picks one by one.
    3. Once the rear glass is unglued, you can lift it off. There's no cable attached.
  3. Removing the midframe

    • 7 × 3,5 mm Phillips
    1. Loosen the Phillips screws that secure the cover. The wireless charging coil and NFC antenna are attached to the plastic cover.
    2. The cover is hooked into the housing. Lever with a tool under the plastic frame and lift the frame upwards.
    3. Now you can remove the plastic cover together with the coil.
  4. Disconnecting the battery

    • Battery Connector
    1. Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the battery contact from the motherboard.

Always lever from a side where there are no small components on the motherboard. This avoids unintentional damage to capacitors or ICs.

  5. Removing the speaker

    • 7 × 3,5 mm Phillips
    1. Loosen the Phillips screws that secure the speaker and then remove it.
    2. You can easily release the speaker by pulling it up at the top with your fingernail.
  6. Removing the SIM card tray

    1. Slide a SIM tool into the hole in the SIM tray.
    2. Take the SIM slider out of the device.

    • Display connector
    • Camera connector
    • Antenna connector
    • USB connector
    1. First carefully remove the highlighted connectors from the main board using a spudger. They connect the front camera, the screen and various antennas.
    2. Another contact is located on the lower side of the main board and cannot be separated directly.
    3. Use the Supdger to carefully lever up the bottom side of the board until you notice the connector coming loose.
    4. Now you can carefully remove the motherboard. Make sure it doesn’t get caught on the connectors you already disconnected.
    5. Then set the board aside in a safe place.
  8. Removing the battery

The battery is strongly glued in place, so you should use hot air again to loosen the glue.

Never heat the battery directly and avoid deforming the battery too much.

    1. Heat the adhesive on the back of the battery by heating the display.
    2. We recommend using a flat tool, such as the iPlastix, to get under the battery all around and carefully lever it.
    3. If the adhesive is loosened everywhere, lift the battery and remove it from the device.

Be careful not to damage the battery. Take your time again and heat the glue several times.

  10. Preparing the new battery

G7 ThinQ - Preparing the new battery 01
    • Battery adhesive
    1. If the adhesive remains in the device and still sticks quite well, then you can insert the new battery directly.
    2. Make sure, however, that the adhesive doesn't wrinkle and pushes the battery upwards. This can result in the backcover not being able to be attached flat later and protruding slightly.
    3. If there is not enough glue left, we recommend using new glue so that the battery is securely attached to the device and can not come loose during use.
    4. Use very thin double-sided adhesive tape and again make sure that the battery is lying flat in the device and is not pushed upwards by the adhesive.

  11. Installing the battery

    G7 ThinQ - Installing the battery 01
    G7 ThinQ - Installing the battery 02
    1. Put the battery in the display unit.
    2. Press the battery into the frame firmly so the glue will stick better.

You can also wait until all the other components are installed before inserting the battery. This makes it easier to insert the main board in the next step.

    • USB connector
    • Display connector
    • Camera connector
    • Antenna connector
    1. Take the motherboard and carefully insert it into the device. Be careful not to pinch any cables. Bend all connectors to the side.
    2. When the mainboard is positioned correctly, you can connect the connector on the bottom by pushing it down.

The connector should click into place directly. Do not force the contact if this does not work right away. First check that the mainboard is correctly positioned.

    1. Then connect all the other connectors.

  13. Installing the SIM card tray

G7 ThinQ - Installing the SIM card tray 01

    1. Insert the SIM card holder. If it's stuck, don't push it in with force. In this case check if the mainboard is correctly positioned.
  14. Installing the speaker

    2. Make sure it's latched in at the bottom.
  15. Connecting the battery

    1. Put the cover with the antenna back in the enclosure after sliding it under the speaker at the bottom.
    2. Then press the cover with your fingers until it clicks gently into place.
    3. Fasten the phillips screws.

    1. Turn on your device and test it before you finally close it.
    2. Drag any app across the entire screen. Drag the app once around the entire border and then in a zigzag across the screen. The app should always follow your finger.
    3. Then test the display brightness by dragging the brightness slider to minimum and maximum.

Test especially all functions of the part you replaced.

  18. Attaching the backcover

    G7 ThinQ - Attaching the backcover 01
    G7 ThinQ - Attaching the backcover 02
    G7 ThinQ - Attaching the backcover 03

If the adhesive on the back cover is still intact, you can seal your device without using a new adhesive frame.

    1. Put the back cover back in its original position.
    2. Press the back cover on all over so the glue will stick.

You can also heat your device with hot air and then clamp it or weight it down with a couple of books so the glue will stick better.

If you install a new back cover, now remove the last protective films from the adhesive surfaces.

Please also note that after a repair the device is no longer 100% waterproof.
