Introduction

In this guide, we show you how to replace your iPhone 6’s defective Lightning connector on your own. You need this repair if your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone, you can’t charge your iPhone, the headphone output has a loose connection, or remote control of the headset isn’t working. You also need to replace the Lightning connector if people can’t understand you on the phone because your microphone isn’t working.

  1. Turning off your Device

    1. Turn your iPhone off completely to avoid damaging it during the repair.
    2. Press the standby button for about three seconds until the slider appears.
    3. Wipe it from left to right. Now your iPhone will shut down completely, which can take about ten seconds.
  2. Removing the enclosure screws

    1. You need a pentalobe screwdriver to open the iPhone 6.
    2. Remove the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. Remove the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. Put both screws in the same container.

    1. Put your iPhone 6 on a soft, clean surface to avoid scratching the back.
    2. To lift the front panel, you need a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If the screen is severely cracked, cover all of it with packing tape before you continue.
    3. Place the suction cup over the Home button (if possible) or next to it (see figure 1). While lifting the screen with the suction cup, insert the hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display frame and press down the aluminum frame. Also use the hard plastic pick to raise the screen (see figure 2). This usually takes several attempts.
    4. As soon as you can lift the screen a few millimeters, you have to carefully work your way around the outside until it’s loosened on both sides (see figure 3).
  4. Disconnecting the battery connector

    1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the Phillips screws on the battery connector (see figure 1). Then lift the cover (see figure 2). Put all the parts in the same container.

    2. Now carefully lift the battery connector by inserting the pointed tip of the ESD spudger slightly below the connector (see figure 3). If you don’t have a spudger, you can also try using your fingernail.
  5. Disconnecting the display connectors

    1. First remove the five Phillips screws from the silver cover (see figure 1). Put the screws in the same container. Then lift the cover to remove it.
      1 x 3.1 mm Phillips screw
      3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screw
      1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw
    2. Disconnect the following four overlapping connectors (see figure 2) in the order shown below. Be very careful. Place the pointed tip of the spudger very slightly below the contact and lift it up.

    1. Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the lower oblong connector for the Lightning connector).
    2. Testing the new Lightning connector
      • Temporarily connect the new Lightning connector and the Battery .
      • Then temporarily connect the display.
      • Start your iPhone and check whether the headphone jack (including remote control of the headphones) and the microphone work. Check whether your PC recognizes your iPhone.
  7. Removing the speaker

    1. Now remove the following four Phillips screws that hold the speaker in place (see figure 1). Put the screws in different containers so you can easily identify them later.
      2 x 2.9 mm Phillips screws
      2 x 2.3 mm Phillips screws
    2. Carefully detach the small antenna connector using the spudger (see figure 2). Push the antenna cable off of the speaker (see figure 3).
    3. Now you can remove the speaker (see figure 4).
  8. Removing the vibration motor

    1. Remove the two screws that hold the vibration motor in place (see figure 1).
      2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screw
    2. Now remove the vibration motor (see figure 2)

    1. Unscrew the two Phillips screws from the Lightning cover (see figure 1).
      2 x 3.0 mm Phillips screw
    2. Now lift the Lightning cover to remove it (see figure 2).
  10. Removing the screws

    1. Now remove the following seven Phillips screws. Put the screws in different containers so you can easily identify them later.
      2 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw
      2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screw
      1 x 3.6 mm Phillips screw
      2 x 3.0 mm Phillips screw

    1. First remove the small black piece of plastic (see figure 1). Then carefully detach the microphone using the laboratory spatula or the spudger (see figure 2).
    2. Insert the laboratory spatula below the ribbon cable and carefully detach it from the base (see figure 3). The cable is only glued in place at the point where the speaker was.
    3. Use the spatula or spudger to loosen the headphone jack (see figure 4) and the Lightning connector (see figure 5).
    4. Now carefully continue detaching the Lightning connector from the base using the spatula or spudger (see figures 6 and 7).
    5. Then carefully remove the ribbon cable using your fingers.
  12. Inserting the Lightning connector

    1. Now put the new Lightning connector in the original position (see figure 1).
    2. Make sure that the Lightning connector, the audio jack and the microphone are fitted properly against the frame (see figure 2).
  13. Attach the Lightning connector

    1. Now insert the small black piece of plastic over the microphone again (see figure 1).
    2. Then screw in all seven screws that attach the Lightning connector again (figure 2).

    1. Now install the Lightning cover (see figure 5) and screw it in place (see figure 6).

  15. Installing the vibration motor

    1. Place the new vibration motor at the original location (see figure 1).
    2. Screw the vibration motor in place again (see figure 2).

  16. Installing the speaker

    1. Put the new speaker in the original position. Make sure it’s inserted correctly and the cables with the connectors are exposed. In this process, make sure the antenna cable with the little metal ring is installed on the speaker correctly (see figure 1). Now you can fasten the Philipps screws again (see figure 2).

    1. Now reconnect the little antenna cable and the connector for the Lightning connector in the appropriate positions.
  18. Connecting the display

    1. Reattach the connectors (see figure 1). Connecting the LCD connector generally takes a few tries. Be very careful to avoid bending the connector.

    2. Start your iPhone as soon as the connectors are securely attached. Check the function of the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera and earpiece.
      If the connectors are not connected properly, stripes will appear on the display or parts of the touchscreen will not work.
    3. Now attach the cover and screw it in place (see figure 2).

  19. Installing the battery

    1. Attach new adhesive strips below the battery. Otherwise, the battery will have too much room and move around
    2. Now put the battery back in the iPhone and connect the connector (see figure 1).
    3. Put on the silver cover and screw it in place (see figure 2).

  20. Attaching the display

    1. Then carefully fold down the screen. Make sure that the edge on the upper part of the screen where the cables are clicks into place properly. Now carefully push the screen on toward the Home button until it is properly installed in the frame.
  21. Fastening the enclosure screws

    1. Now screw in the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure.
