Getting started

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment for each step. We’d be happy to help.

26 steps
  1. Removing the SIM and microSD cards

Xperia Z2 - Removing the SIM and microSD cards 02
Xperia Z2 - Removing the SIM and microSD cards 03
Xperia Z2 - Removing the SIM and microSD cards 04
    1. The SIM card slot is hidden under a cover on the left side of the Xperia Z2. Open the cover with your fingernail or a flat, pointed tool like the steel laboratory spatula. Wedge your finger or the tool under the upper edge of the cover and use a little force to pull it away from the device.
    2. The cover can rotate 360°. Open it so you can easily remove the SIM card tray. There’s a little tab on the tray that you can pull with your fingernail or a pair of tweezers.
    3. The microSD card is also under a cover, this time on the right side of the Xperia Z2. Open the cover like you did for the SIM card.
    4. Remove the microSD card. There’s an indentation in the card that you can pull with your fingernail or the tweezers.
    5. Close both covers again to make the next steps easier.
  2. Removing the back cover

Xperia Z2 - Removing the back cover 01
Xperia Z2 - Removing the back cover 02
    1. The back of the Sony Xperia Z2’s enclosure is glued firmly in place. To detach it, you have to constantly heat it with a heat gun so the glue will soften. Then you have to insert a plastic pick into the gap between the frame and the glass to detach the adhesive.
    2. The gap between the aluminum frame and the glass is very small. We recommend that you use a very flat, sturdy object to get between them.
    3. Carefully lift the back cover while using a suction cup.
    4. As soon as a little gap opens up, use the plastic pick to avoid damaging the aluminum.
  3. Inserting the pick

    Xperia Z2 - Inserting the pick 01
    Xperia Z2 - Inserting the pick 02
    Xperia Z2 - Inserting the pick 03
    1. You should only insert the pick a few millimeters between the back cover and the frame to prevent damage inside the enclosure.
The back cover is painted on the inside. Remove any adhesive residue carefully to avoid scratches or cracks.
    2. The back cover is glued to the entire outer edge of the Sony Xperia Z2. Move the pick once around the entire phone.
    3. Once you’ve detached all the glue, you can carefully lift the back cover.
  4. Removing the battery

    1. First, remove the clear strip of plastic over the battery connection cable.
    2. Insert the flat end of the spudger very slightly below the contact and lift it up. Make sure you don’t break off the resistors that are soldered onto the logic board.
    3. Detach the cable set from the silver plate. It’s lightly glued in place.
    4. Remove the two Phillips screws.
      2 x 3.3 mm Phillips screws
    5. Then remove the battery.
  5. Disconnecting the logic board

Xperia Z2 - Disconnecting all the connections to the logic board 05
    1. Disconnect the 3.5 mm jack socket’s connection to the logic board by carefully prying off the connector with the spudger.
    2. Disconnect the antenna cable that connects the logic board to the sub-board.
    3. Carefully pry the charging port’s connector off of the logic board.
    4. Disconnect the connector for the control buttons.
    5. Unplug the plug connection between the logic board and the rear camera.
  7. Removing the logic board

Xperia Z2 - Removing the logic board 01
Xperia Z2 - Removing the logic board 02
    1. Carefully lift the logic board with the spudger to remove it from the enclosure. The logic board is slightly hooked onto the enclosure. There’s a little opening on the bottom where you can put the spudger.
    2. Take the logic board out of the enclosure with your fingers. Turn it a little to the left so you can remove it more easily without getting caught on the connectors.
  8. Disconnecting all the connections to the sub-board

Xperia Z2 - Disconnecting all the connections to the sub-board 01
Xperia Z2 - Disconnecting all the connections to the sub-board 02
    1. Carefully disconnect the antenna cable from the sub-board.

  9. Removing the bracket on the speaker

Xperia Z2 - Removing the bracket on the speaker 01
Xperia Z2 - Removing the bracket on the speaker 02
    1. There’s a metal bracket holding the speaker and sub-board in place. The bracket is hooked onto the enclosure. You can insert the steel spatula between a retaining clip and the bracket to detach it.
    2. Remove the metal bracket from the enclosure.
  10. Removing the sub-board

    1. Using the steel spatula, carefully disconnect the vibrator motor’s contact from the sub-board. Insert the spatula between the sub-board and the contact plate.
    2. Using the steel spatula, carefully lift the microphone out of the hollow in the sub-board.
    3. Use just a little force to detach the speaker contacts on the transparent reddish brown backing material from the sub-board.
    4. Remove the two screws that hold the sub-board in place.
      2 x 3.4 mm Phillips screws
    5. Use the flat end of the spudger to carefully pry the sub-board out of the enclosure. Put the spudger in the middle to avoid damaging the flexible flat cables.
    6. Remove the sub-board from the enclosure.
  11. Removing the antenna cable

    1. Using the steel spatula, carefully detach the charger contact’s flexible flat cable from the enclosure by inserting the spatula between the flexible flat cable and the enclosure. The flexible flat cable is glued to the frame, so heat can make it easier to remove. If the glue’s too strong, heat the enclosure with hot air.
    2. Remove the flexible flat cable from your smartphone.
  13. Removing the main flexible flat cable

Xperia Z2 - Removing the main flexible flat cable 07
    1. Carefully fold over the flexible flat cable to expose the contact of the main flexible flat cable below it. Hold the contacts for the vibrator motor and speaker, as well as the voice microphone, in place with your other hand.
    2. Using the spudger, carefully detach the main flexible flat cable from the display.
    3. The flexible flat cable is glued to the enclosure. Carefully detach the flexible flat cable by inserting the steel spatula between the enclosure and the flexible flat cable. If the glue’s too strong, you can heat the enclosure with hot air.
    4. The flexible flat cable is hooked onto the enclosure on two sides. Use a little force and a pair of tweezers to remove the flexible flat cable from the enclosure. Be really careful because there are little parts on the flexible flat cable that could get torn off.
  14. Transferring parts

    Xperia Z2 - Transferring parts 01
    Xperia Z2 - Transferring parts 02
    1. Not all replacement parts have the same features, so you may have to transfer the following parts:
      • 3.5 mm jack socket
      • Speaker for earpiece
      • Rear camera
      • Type plate
      • Cover for SIM card slot

    1. Put the main flexible flat cable in its original position.
    2. Use the tweezers to click the flexible flat cable into place on both sides. Once again, note that little parts could get torn off of the flexible flat cable.
    3. Press the flexible flat cable back onto the enclosure so the adhesive surfaces stick to each other, and press down the contacts for the microphone, vibrator motor and speaker with your hand so you can easily connect the display.
    4. Fold the flexible flat cable back over so the display contact is covered.
  16. Installing the charger contact’s flexible flat cable

Xperia Z2 - Installing the charger contact’s flexible flat cable 01
    1. Put the charger contact’s flexible flat cable back in the enclosure. Make sure it’s in the right position and press the flexible flat cable firmly onto the enclosure with your fingers so the glue will stick well.
  17. Connecting the antenna cable

Xperia Z2 - Connecting the antenna cable 01
    1. Attach the antenna cable to your smartphone again. There are two metallic sleeves on the cable. You have to press these sleeves into the two metallic brackets. This way, the cable will be in the right position in the enclosure.
  18. Installing the sub-board
