Introduction

Repair the Google Pixel 2 yourself with this detailed step-by-step guide. During this repair we replace the touch screen and the screen. You may have to take some small parts from the old display unit, depending on how the new spare part is equipped. We recommend that you visually inspect your spare part before installing it.

The Pixel 2 display is relatively easy to replace because you can remove the display directly and don't have to take the whole device apart first. When removing the display, however, it's better to take some time into your planning.

Run a data backup before the repair, use a clean work surface and take enough time. If you have questions, use the live chat on our website or write a comment.

Getting started

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment for each step. We’d be happy to help.

9 steps
  1. Switch off your device

Pixel 2 - Switch off your device 01
Pixel 2 - Switch off your device 02
Pixel 2 - Switch off your device 03

Switch off the device before the repair.

    1. Press and hold the standby button until "Power off" appears.
    2. Tap again to confirm and wait till the device has shut down.

If the touch screen is damaged, you can also press and hold the standby button for a few seconds until the phone shuts down.

  2. Remove the screen

    Pixel 2 - Remove the screen 01
    Pixel 2 - Remove the screen 02
    Pixel 2 - Remove the screen 03
    Pixel 2 - Remove the screen 04

Now you can start and take off the display.

The screen is very easy to damage. So you should only replace internal parts like the battery, if the display is already broken. It's better to heat the screen several times if you feel resistance, instead of bending it.The cable underneath is very sensitive. Never insert the tool more than 5 mm. Also don't use the tool as a lever, but run it flatly along the edges to release the glue.

    1. First heat the glue around the edges with a hot air tool to about 60°C. Repeat and heat the display to the point where you can barely touch it.
    2. Then slide a very thin, flat tool between the display and frame and slide it along the edge to remove a corner of the display. Tools like the iPlastix or the iFlex are particularly good for opening.
    3. Then slide a very thin, flat tool between the display and the frame and slide it around the edge to release one corner of the display.
    4. To prevent the glue from reconnecting, you can use several picks and insert them into the already detached part. To prevent damage, do not insert the tool further than 5 mm.
    5. When the glue is loosened all around, you can lift off the display. Open the display carefully (as shown in the picture) as the flex cable is still connected.

The display is very thin. If the display badly broken, you have to scrape it out of the frame bit by bit. Scrape any glass residue out of the frame using a flat metal tool.If the display is very splintered, you can also stick some parcel tape on it. This way it stays whole and you have less glass splinters flying around.

  3. Remove the display

    1. The display plug is secured with a cover plate.
    2. Loosen the two Torx T5 screws and remove the cover.
    3. Now carefully disconnect the plug with a spudger.
    4. Now you can remove the display.
Be very careful not to damage the connector socket or components on the board.
  4. Prepare the new display

Pixel 2 - Prepare the new display 01
Pixel 2 - Prepare the new display 02

Now check the new display for the parts that need to be transferred from the old display.

    1. They include the meshes above the speaker holes and the white bezel of the front camera. You can carefully remove them from the old display and attach them to the new spare part.
  5. Clean and prepare the frame

Pixel 2 - Clean and prepare the frame 01
Pixel 2 - Clean and prepare the frame 02
Pixel 2 - Clean and prepare the frame 03

Before using the new display you have to clean the frame.

    • Remove all old glue residues and glass splinters.

You can also use a cloth with isopropanol to really remove all the remains of glue.

  6. Attach the new adhesive frame sticker

Pixel 2 - Attach the new adhesive frame sticker 01
Pixel 2 - Attach the new adhesive frame sticker 02
Pixel 2 - Attach the new adhesive frame sticker 03
Pixel 2 - Attach the new adhesive frame sticker 04

Attach the adhesive frame to the display to reassemble the device.

    1. First place the adhesive frame with the protective film on the display to see how it is applied.
    2. Loosen the white backing at the edge and fit the adhesive frame into the device.
    3. Make sure that it is fitted flush and then gradually push it firmly onto the frame.
    4. Press the adhesive sticker firmly against the frame with a small tool like a pair of tweezers.
    5. Now you can loosen the flap and remove the middle part of the sticker.

Make sure that you do not remove the black frame sticker. If it comes loose, carefully reapply it with a tool.

  7. Connect the display

    Pixel 2 - Connect the display 01
    Pixel 2 - Connect the display 02
    Pixel 2 - Connect the display 03
    Pixel 2 - Connect the display 04
    Pixel 2 - Connect the display 05
    • 2 × Torx T5

Place the display on the side of the unit. Place the display on a raised surface so that the edge does not accidentally stick to the adhesive.

    1. Reconnect the display connector. Make sure that it is correctly secured, the plug should click into place with a slight click.
    2. Reinstall the cover plate and screw it on using the Torx T5 screws.
  8. Test the replacement screen

Pixel 2 - Test the replacement screen 01
Pixel 2 - Test the replacement screen 02
Pixel 2 - Test the replacement screen 03

Now flip the display over but don't press it down yet. Before you finally seal the device, you should test it.

    1. Turn on the Pixel 2 and test the screen.
    2. Set the brightness to minimum and maximum.
    3. Drag an app icon across the entire screen to make sure the touch works in all places.
  9. Close the device

    Pixel 2 - Close the device 01
    Pixel 2 - Close the device 02
    Pixel 2 - Close the device 03

Now you can assemble the device again.

    1. Press the display into the frame on all sides.

Give the adhesive a few hours to bond properly. You can lightly weigh down the device with a few books, for example.
