Changing the screen of your iPhone

Have you decided to change the broken screen on your iPhone yourself? This way you act sustainably and not only protect the environment, but also your wallet. A very good choice! Changing the display of an Apple smartphone is relatively easy compared to other manufacturers. Often you are faced with the task of transferring all small parts from the original unit to the new spare part. At Apple, many components, such as the charging socket, the battery or the Taptic Engine, are not located on the screen unit, but in the case. For iPhone 10, for example, you only need to pick up a single part - the earpiece sensor cable. That makes your job a lot easier. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't like the idea of self-repairing and sometimes disables features after a replacement display is installed. For iPhone 11, for example, an error message appears when a new screen is connected and TrueTone is disabled. TrueTone automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen to the ambient light. After changing the display you have to do without this function. However, this will also happen if you decide to go to a mobile phone repair shop. Only selected service partners, Apple itself and certified repair shops have the option of activating the function even after a repair. To do this, the ALS code (Ambient Light Sensor) must be migrated from the original display to the new one.

The quality of iPhone replacement screens at iDoc

We offer replacement screens for different Apple models. Our buying department makes sure that the replacement displays are of the best possible quality. To ensure this, we work closely with our suppliers. But why don't we offer you originals for the iPhone? Unfortunately, Apple does not sell original spare parts, but only uses them for a limited circle. Only their own repair shops, certified repair shops and service partners have access to the original spare parts. They are therefore not available on the independent market. In such a case, we offer the best possible quality level available on the free market - OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer. This means that all components of the replacement screen are original and new, but the final spare part has not been approved by the Apple itself. Want to know more about this topic? In our blog we'll go into the different quality levels in more detail.

LCD or OLED? Apple uses both technologies for its displays

Up to iPhone 10, Apple only installed LC displays in its smartphones. In the meantime, OLED technology has also been used. But what does this mean and what are the differences between LCD and OLED? LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, the image is generated by liquid crystals. These are driven by electrical impulses and, depending on their orientation, allow a certain amount of light to pass through. This results in different colors. Background lighting is required to make the colours and so the image visible. LCDs therefore have a very strong performance during a very bright day. OLED is the abbreviation for Organic Light Emitting Diode. These diodes can illuminate themselves, so backlighting is not necessary. Compared to LC displays, OLEDs show a wider colour spectrum and are more energy-efficient. However, the manufacturing costs are currently still higher than for an LCD, as production is more complex.

Retina: New technology or clever marketing?

You're probably wondering how the term retina display relates to the LCD and OLED technologies described here. In fact, retina is nothing more than a marketing term. It describes screens whose pixel density should be so high that the individual pixels are not visible to the human eye from a typical viewing distance. The higher the pixel density, i.e. the ratio of pixels per inch, the sharper the image. However, this is not Apple's unique selling point - other manufacturers also use screens with an equally high, in some cases even higher, pixel density. Thus, the term retina is to be seen regardless of the technology used in the display.
