Your screen is no longer working.

This guide shows you how to fix a broken LCD/digitizer of your Google Pixel phone. This fix is necessary, if the glass is cracked, the touchscreen stops responding or the OLED stays black or flickers.

Do a data backup before the repair and touch the screen against a radiator to discharge electrostatic charges.

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment. We’d be happy to help.

8 steps
  1. Switch off device

Pixel - Switch off device 03

Switch off the device before the repair.

    1. Press and hold the standby button until "Power off" appears.
    2. Tap again to confirm.
  2. Lifting the display

Now you can start and lift up the display.

Careful, the screen is very easy to damage.

    1. First heat the glue around the edges with a hot air tool to about 60°C. Repeat and heat the display to the point where you can barely touch it.
    2. Then slide a very thin metal tool between the display and the frame. Pry open a gap to insert a soft pick.
    3. Then slide the pick between frame and display. You can use other picks to get off the display all around. When the glue is detached everywhere, you can lift the display off.
    4. The display is very thin. If the display badly broken, you have to scrape it out of the frame bit by bit. Scrape any glass residue out of the frame using a flat metal tool.

  3. Disconnecting the display

Pixel - Disconnecting the display 01

    1. Under the screen there's a very delicate flex cable. Fold open the display very slowly so you don't strain it.
    2. Now unplug the display connector. First remove the two 3.5 mm Torx T5 screws on the bracket.
    3. Then remove the bracket and unplug the connector using a plastic tool.
    4. Now put aside the display.

As you can see, the display unit is very fragile and the glass screen has no extra protection, so be very careful.

  4. Testing the display

    • Display connector

Before assembly, switch on your phone to test the spare part.
Take the new display, but don't remove the backing films yet.

    1. Put the display on one edge and plug in the connector. This may need several attempts. Make sure not to damage the connector.
    2. Drag any app across the sceen in a zig-zag pattern. If it doesn't bounce back, everything's fine.
    3. Test the display's minimum and maximum brightness and look for any pixel errors.
    4. If everything is ok, switch off the device again and unplug the display

  6. Attaching the frame sticker

If you're just replacing the battery, this step is optional. You can also reuse the old glue residue. If you're installing a new display, you need a frame sticker, so the spare part will hold. In any case, make sure the glue is evenly distributed and doesn't have lumps, otherwise the display won't sit in the frame evenly.

Put the frame sticker on the display to protect your device against spray water.

    1. Carefully remove as much adhesive residue as possible with a soft plastic tool.
    2. First put the frame sticker on the display with the backing film attached to check the alignment.
    3. Then peel off the first backing film and stick on the frame sticker.
    4. Once it' sticking properly, also remove the second backing film.
  7. Preparing the new display

    1. Carefully peel it off using tweezers.
    2. Paste it over the earpiece opening of the the new display unit.
    3. Remove all the protective films of the new display, including the smaller ones under the flex cable. Put the display in the frame and make sure it's sitting right.
