The screen is broken or remains black.

In this guide, we show you how to replace your iPhone 8 Plus’ defective display unit. You need this repair if the glass is cracked, 3D Touch no longer responds to touch, or the LCD remains black or flickers.
Back up all your data before the repair, and touch something like a radiator to get rid of any static charges.

Getting started with the repair of your iPhone 8 Plus

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment. We’d be happy to help.

22 steps
  1. Switching off your device

iPhone 8 Plus - Switching off your device 01
iPhone 8 Plus - Switching off your device 02
iPhone 8 Plus - Switching off your device 03
    1. Turn your iPhone off completely to avoid damaging it during the repair. Press the Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds until the slider labeled “power off” appears.
    2. Swipe it from left to right. Now your iPhone will shut down completely, which can take about ten seconds.
  2. Removing the enclosure screws

iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the enclosure screws 01
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the enclosure screws 02
    • 2 × 3,4mm Pentalob

You need a pentalobe screwdriver (PL1) to open the iPhone 8 Plus.

    1. Remove the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. They’re to the right and left of the Lightning connector. Put the screws in the same section of your magnetic pad.
  3. Lifting the display

iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 03
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 04
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 05
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 06
    1. Put your iPhone 8 Plus on a soft, clean surface to avoid scratching the back.
    2. To lift the front panel, you need a suction cup, a hard plastic pick and a heat gun. If the screen is severely cracked, cover all of it with packing tape before you continue.
    3. The screen is glued to the frame. Use a heat gun to heat the outer edges of the display to about 60°C (140°F).
    4. Place the suction cup over the Home button (if possible) or next to it. While lifting the screen with the suction cup, insert the hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display frame and then press down the aluminum frame. Because the display is glued on, you have to slide the pick all around the iPhone between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Don’t insert the pick too far on the side of the Sleep/Wake button, because this could damage the display's flex cables.
    5. Now use the pick to lever the display, so the tabs come out of the aluminum frame. Then you can unfold the display to the side.
    6. Lean the display to a stable object to avoid overbending the sensitive flex cables.

If necessary, heat the outer edges of the display a few times. Don’t forget that the flex cables for the display are on the side of the Sleep/Wake button. After being opened, the iPhone 8 loses its warranty for protection against dust and spray water (IP 67 rating).

  4. Disconnecting the battery contact

    • 2 × 1,2 mm Phillips
    • 1 × 1,4 mm Phillips
    • 1 × 2,6 mm Phillips

Before starting the repair, disconnect the battery contact to prevent short circuits and avoid accidentally turning on your device during the repair.

    1. Use a phillips screwdriver (Ph00) to remove the phillips screws. Then take off the cover. Put all the parts in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. Now carefully lift off the battery contact by inserting a plastic spudger slightly below the connector.
  5. Disconnecting the display contacts

    1. The earpiece is on the back of the display unit. Remove the Phillips screws from the cover on the earpiece. Put all the parts in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. The earpiece is under the front camera’s flexible flat cable. Fold the cable slightly to the side so you can remove the earpiece.

Note that the screws have different lengths. Mixing them up could cause damage to the display during assembly.

  8. Removing the FaceTime cable

    2. Now remove the sensors by lifting them carefully.
    3. Carefully remove the part with the four golden contacts using the spatula.
    4. Now you can remove the cable set.
Be very careful when removing the FaceTime cable. The cable can rip very easily at the spot to the left of the earpiece.

Use the heat gun to soften the glue on the FaceTime cable.

    • 4 × 1,1 mm Y-Type-Schraube
    1. Remove the four Y-type screws. Now remove the silver cover. Put everything in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the contact of the Home button cable. If necessary, press it against the display because the contact isn’t screwed in place.
The Home button cable is easily damageable.
    1. Carefully insert the tool below the cable set, which is generally glued firmly in place, to detach it.
If necessary, use the heat gun to soften the glue.
    1. Push the Home button out of the display unit from the inside.
