Back up all your data before the repair, and touch something like a radiator to get rid of any static charges.

Getting started

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment for each step. We’d be happy to help.

22 steps
  1. Switching off your device

iPhone 8 Plus - Switching off your device 01
iPhone 8 Plus - Switching off your device 02
    1. Turn your iPhone off completely to avoid damaging it during the repair. Press the Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds until the slider labeled “power off” appears.
    2. Swipe it from left to right. Now your iPhone will shut down completely, which can take about ten seconds.
  2. Removing the enclosure screws

iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the enclosure screws 01
    • 2 × 3,4mm Pentalob

You need a pentalobe screwdriver (PL1) to open the iPhone 8 Plus.

    1. Remove the two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. They’re to the right and left of the Lightning connector. Put the screws in the same section of your magnetic pad.
  3. Lifting the display

iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 02
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 03
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 04
iPhone 8 Plus - Lifting the display 05
    1. Put your iPhone 8 Plus on a soft, clean surface to avoid scratching the back.
    2. To lift the front panel, you need a suction cup, a hard plastic pick and a heat gun. If the screen is severely cracked, cover all of it with packing tape before you continue.
    3. The screen is glued to the frame. Use a heat gun to heat the outer edges of the display to about 60°C (140°F).
    4. Place the suction cup over the Home button (if possible) or next to it. While lifting the screen with the suction cup, insert the hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display frame and then press down the aluminum frame. Because the display is glued on, you have to slide the pick all around the iPhone between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Don’t insert the pick too far on the side of the Sleep/Wake button, because this could damage the display's flex cables.
    5. Now use the pick to lever the display, so the tabs come out of the aluminum frame. Then you can unfold the display to the side.
    6. Lean the display to a stable object to avoid overbending the sensitive flex cables.

If necessary, heat the outer edges of the display a few times. Don’t forget that the flex cables for the display are on the side of the Sleep/Wake button. After being opened, the iPhone 8 loses its warranty for protection against dust and spray water (IP 67 rating).

  4. Disconnecting the battery contact

iPhone 8 Plus - Disconnecting the battery contact 03
    • 2 × 1,2 mm Phillips
    • 1 × 1,4 mm Phillips
    • 1 × 2,6 mm Phillips

Before starting the repair, disconnect the battery contact to prevent short circuits and avoid accidentally turning on your device during the repair.

    1. Use a phillips screwdriver (Ph00) to remove the phillips screws. Then take off the cover. Put all the parts in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. Now carefully lift off the battery contact by inserting a plastic spudger slightly below the connector.
  5. Disconnecting the display contacts

    • Display Connector

    • 1 × 0,9 mm Y-Type
    1. Use a Y-Type screwdriver (Y000) to remove the two Y-Type screws. Then take off the cover. Put all the parts in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. Using a spudger, carefully disconnect the FaceTime contact from the PCB.
    3. Now you can take off the display all the way.
  7. Removing the earpiece

iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the earpiece 01
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the earpiece 02
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the earpiece 03
    • 2 × 1,7 mm Phillips-Schraube
    • 1 × 2,7 mm Phillips-Schraube
    • 2 × 2,2 mm Phillips
    1. The earpiece is on the back of the display unit. Remove the Phillips screws from the cover on the earpiece. Put all the parts in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. The earpiece is under the front camera’s flexible flat cable. Fold the cable slightly to the side so you can remove the earpiece.

Note that the screws have different lengths. Mixing them up could cause damage to the display during assembly.

  8. Removing the FaceTime cable

iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the FaceTime cable 02
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the FaceTime cable 03

Remove the cable set in two steps:

    1. First insert the spudger or spatula under the flex cable and carefully disconnect it. It’s firmly glued in place here.
    2. Now remove the sensors by lifting them carefully.
    3. Carefully remove the part with the four golden contacts using the spatula.
    4. Now you can remove the cable set.
Be very careful when removing the FaceTime cable. The cable can rip very easily at the spot to the left of the earpiece.

Use the heat gun to soften the glue on the FaceTime cable.

  9. Removing the Home button

    • 4 × 1,1 mm Y-Type-Schraube
    1. Remove the four Y-type screws. Now remove the silver cover. Put everything in the same section of your magnetic pad.
    2. Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the contact of the Home button cable. If necessary, press it against the display because the contact isn’t screwed in place.
The Home button cable is easily damageable.
    1. Carefully insert the tool below the cable set, which is generally glued firmly in place, to detach it.
If necessary, use the heat gun to soften the glue.
    1. Push the Home button out of the display unit from the inside.
  10. Removing the rear panel

iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the rear panel 01
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the rear panel 02
iPhone 8 Plus - Removing the rear panel 03
    • 5 × 1,1 mm Y-Type-Schraube
    • 1 × 1,6 mm Phillips-Schraube
    1. Now remove the Y-type screws and the one Phillips screw that hold the metal cover in place.
    2. Remove the stickers of the display contacts from the metal cover.
    3. Remove the metal cover.
  11. Preparing the new display

iPhone 8 Plus - Preparing the new display 01
    • Frontcamera
    • Earpiece
    • Sensors
    1. Not all available displays have the same features. If necessary, you’ll have to take some of the following parts from your old display before installing the new screen:
      • Front camera bracket (lightly glued in place)
      • Sensor bracket (lightly glued in place)
    2. Peel the protective film off the new display and remove the seals.

    • 1 × 1,6 mm Phillips-Schraube
    1. Lead the flex cables through the opening in the rear panel.
    2. Now you can reinsert the screws to attach the rear panel.
Place all screws in their thread holes before tightening them. This ensures that the rear panel is placed correctly.

    3. Now use the sticker to fix the flex cables in place.

  13. Installing the Home button

    3. Stick the FaceTime cable into its original position.

It’s important to position the proximity sensor correctly, because it won’t be fully functional otherwise.

  15. Installing the earpiece

    1. Put the earpiece in its original position below the flexible flat cable, between the FaceTime camera and the sensors.
    2. Then put the cover back on and fasten the five Phillips screws. Make sure the front camera is centered at the front of the display. Move the front camera slightly if necessary.

Don’t tighten the screws too much or you’ll see them through the finish on the front.Don't switch the screws. If a screw is too long, it scratches the finish and can be seen on the front.
