Your iPhone 11's screen is cracked or the touchscreen doesn't work?

In this tutorial you will learn step by step how to change your broken display on your own. Repairing it yourself saves you money and you don't have to give data to third parties. In addition, by looking inside your iPhone, you can understand even better how your device is constructed.

iPhone 11 manuals are produced in our in-house studio by our experienced technicians. In addition to the steps for repair, you'll also see how much time you should plan on replacing the Apple display as well as the tools you'll need for your phone repair. Need tools or iPhone parts? We'll link you to the best quality equipment in the instructions. With just one click you can put the right spare parts directly into the shopping cart - without having to search in the shop.

A little tip: Before you start here, take a look at the performance of your battery. You can see this in the iOS settings menu under "Battery". If the maximum capacity is less than 80%, we recommend to replace it. This way, you only have to open your device once and you've killed several birds with one stone.

Getting started with the repair of your iPhone 11

If you get stuck or have questions, you can post a comment. We’d be happy to help.

16 steps
  1. Switching off the iPhone 11

    iPhone 11 - Switching off the iPhone 11 03
    iPhone 11 - Switching off the iPhone 11 04
    1. To protect your iPhone 11 from damage during repairs, turn it off completely. To do this, press and hold the Standby button and one of the two volume buttons for about three seconds.
    2. If the slider shows the message "Turn off", you can wipe it from left to right. Your phone will now shut down completely. This process takes about ten seconds.
  2. Removing the pentalobe screws

    • 2 × 6,8 mm Pentalobe

Use a Pentalobe screwdriver (PL1) to open your iPhone 11.

    1. On the lower side of the housing, to the right and left of the Lightning connector, you will see two Pentalobe screws. Remove both and place them in a shared field on the magnetic pad.

Once the device has been opened, the guaranteed protection against dust and splashing water according to the IP68 classification will expire.

  3. Loosening the screen

    1. Place your iPhone 11 on a soft, clean surface. This will avoid scratches on the back of your device in this step.
    2. To lift the screen, you'll need a suction cup, a hard plastic plectrum and a hot air dryer. Is your glass very badly splintered? Then stick a strip of parcel tape on the glass in advance to protect yourself from splinters.
    3. To remove the glued screen from the frame, heat the edge of the display with your hairdryer to about 60° C (140° F) degrees.
    4. Now place the suction cup on the lower edge of the iPhone. Use the key ring on the suction cup to lift the display. At the same time, push the hard plastic plectrum between the case and display frame and press the case frame down. To remove the display adhesive, you must move the plectrum completely around the iPhone.

The tool should not be inserted further than about 5mm into the device to avoid damaging any components inside the iPhone. This is especially important on the side of the standby button, as this is where the sensitive flex cables from the display are located.

You can also use an iFlex instead of the hard plastic plectrum. However, this can leave scratches on the frame.

    1. Once you have passed around the device with the plectrum, you can now push the display upwards using the plectrum This will release the metal clamps from the frame.
    2. Now open the display to the side. To avoid overstretching the flexible cables, you can lean the display against a stable object or use the iHold.

Do not open the display more than a little over 90 degrees to avoid damaging the sensitive flexible cables.

  4. Disconnecting the display connectors

    • 5 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
    • Touch connector
    • LCD connector
    • Earpiece connector

The three display connectors for the earpiece, LCD and touch screen are secured with a metal plate.

    1. With a Y-type Y000 screwdriver you can remove the Y-type screws of the metal cover. Place all parts in a common field on the magnetic mat.

With the iPhone 7 Apple introduced the Y-type screws. Maybe you also heard the term Tri-Point or Tri-Wing, which is a wrong name for this type of screws. To remove them, be sure to use a suitable screwdriver to avoid damaging the screw heads.

    1. Once the metal cover is removed, you can carefully take off all three connectors. To do this, use a plastic spudger, not a metal one. Put the spudger under the connector and lift it gently.
    2. Now you can remove the display. Don't be surprised if there are traces of glue on the frame and display.

  5. Loosening the earpiece

    • 3 × 1,5 mm Phillips
    • 1 × 1,2 mm Y-Type

When loosening the earcup you should pay attention to the thin and sensitive flexible cables connecting the earcup and the sensors. This part cannot be replaced. If it is damaged, it may cause problems with the FaceID function.

    1. Remove the four screws that hold the earcup in the unit. Then fold the earcup over.
  6. Removing the sensor and earpiece flex cable

The Flex cable of the earcup accommodates various sensors which are led through several openings of the display. For example, the proximity sensor is located directly under the earcup.

    1. First remove the small metal holder that sits above the ambient light sensor.
    2. The flexible cable is slightly glued. To loosen the glue, use an ordinary hair dryer and heat it.
    3. Now you can carefully push a flat, stable tool, such as a steel spatula or tweezers, under the flex cable.
    4. Lever the various sensors out of their sockets.
    5. Be careful when loosening the components, as the flex cable can easily be damaged.
    6. Once all parts are loosened, you can remove the flex cable.
  7. Removing the back plate

    • 9 × 1,1 mm Y-Type

The back of the display is protected by a metal plate. You have to adopt this for the new display.

    1. First you have to remove all Y-Type screws on the sides.

Some of the screws are very tightened. To be able to loosen them, it is very important to use high quality tools.

The flex cables and the display controller are glued to the back plate. Moreover, the plate is hooked to the lower side.

    1. With a hair dryer you can loosen the glue. To completely remove it, use a thin tool and slide it under the cable to loosen it bit by bit.
    2. When all cables are loosened, you can lift the metal plate. Now use a tool to go under the cable and loosen the remaining glue.
    3. Then unhook the plate underneath and lead the flex cable through the opening.
  8. Preparing the new display unit

Be careful! The second cable should not be clamped under the plate.

    1. Now you can hook the plate back into the display and put it down.
    2. Make sure that the plate is correctly positioned and that all screw openings fit perfectly. If this is not the case, lift the plate a little bit and push the hooks a little harder under the display frame.
    3. Now you can glue the flex cable with the display controller to the back plate and fix it with the Y-type screws

In the pictures we show you how to apply the adhesive frame using iPhone 8 as an example. iPhone 11 is very similar in its design, so the adhesive is applied in the same way.

    1. Remove the adhesive residue from the metal frame and display. This will ensure a proper fit of the adhesive frame.
    2. Now you're ready to apply the new glue frame. Remove the first protective film.
    3. First place the adhesive frame on one edge of the case. From there, you can apply it to the device bit by bit. Do not press the adhesive frame firmly until you are sure that it is in place. You can use the plastic spudger for this.
    4. Now remove the next large protective foil.
    5. Do not remove the last small protective film until you have connected the display and attached the cover plates. This way you avoid that something gets stuck on the adhesive frame.

Pay attention to the correct positioning of the adhesive frame. The corners are different and help to find the right position. The iPhone is no longer 100% waterproof after repair!

    2. Afterwards, you can plug the two display connectors and the earcup connector back together.
    3. The connectors have to fit correctly in the device. You should not slide them over the slots on the Logicboard, otherwise you could damage the contacts.

    4. Fix the cover plate with the screws of the same length.

Check all the functions of your phone before you close it again, especially looking at the part you have replaced. Remember to also verify all other components: Are they still working as they did before the repair, for example, did you connect the display correctly?

    1. You can test the touchscreen of your display by selecting an app and moving it across the entire screen. If this works without any problems and the app follows everywhere, the touchscreen is fine.
    2. Test the brightness of the display.
    3. Test the microphone, speakers, earpiece, and proximity sensor by calling someone.
